Eyelash extensions are a beautiful investment that adds volume, length, and glamour to your eyes. They simplify your makeup routine and elevate your look instantly. But to keep those extensions looking full, clean, and gorgeous, you need a disciplined maintenance routine. Poor aftercare can lead to premature shedding, tangling, and even damage to your natural lashes.
The Core Principles of Extension Care
Maintaining lash extensions centers around two main goals: protecting the lash adhesive bond and keeping the lash line healthy and bacteria-free. Here are the five golden rules of eyelash extension maintenance.
1. Cleanse Daily with a Lash Shampoo
Many clients fear that wetting their extensions will make them fall out. In fact, the opposite is true! Natural oils, sweat, dust, and makeup residue build up along the lash line and break down the adhesive bond. Wash your lashes daily using a specialized, oil-free lash foam cleanser and a soft brush, then rinse gently with cool water.
2. Brush Only When Dry
Use a clean spoolie brush to comb through your extensions twice daily—once in the morning and once after cleansing. Always wait until your lashes are completely dry before brushing them, as wet lashes are heavier and more prone to being pulled out of place. Gently spin the spoolie over the tips of the lashes to detangle.
3. Sleep on a Silk or Satin Pillowcase
Cotton pillowcases create friction when you toss and turn, catching on your extensions and pulling them out. Switching to a smooth silk or satin pillowcase allows your lashes to glide friction-free, protecting the adhesive bonds and extending your retention.
4. Strictly Avoid Oil-Based Products & Mascara
Oil is the number one enemy of lash glue. Check the ingredients of your makeup removers, facial washes, and moisturizers to ensure they are 100% oil-free. Never apply mascara to volume lashes, as it clumps the fans together and is extremely difficult to clean off without dissolving the extensions.
5. Schedule Regular Refills
Your natural lashes naturally shed between 2 to 5 lashes per day as part of their growth cycle. To replace shed lashes and remove grown-out extensions, you should book a lash refill appointment every 2 to 3 weeks.
"Consistent cleaning and gentle care are key. Clients who clean their lashes daily experience up to 40% better retention than those who avoid water entirely."
